About this course
During this course, we will explore epilepsy as a neurological condition including the types of seizures and triggers which may affect an individual. The course will also explore the law regarding epilepsy and those who suffer from it. Finally, it will look at the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy, and the support available.
This course will explain what epilepsy is and how it may occur in individuals. The effect of epilepsy on service users as individuals. It will also touch upon the types of seizures that are most common and also outline what signs and symptoms may be seen during a seizure. It will highlight the different types of seizures an individual may encounter, and how to respond accordingly. This will include information on when to seek emergency support. The course will highlight what may trigger an epileptic seizure and what types of epilepsy this may relate to. Finally, the unit will explore how an epileptic seizure can impact an individual‘s body and their physiological being.
It will also details the law relating to those who suffer from epilepsy. Laws such as those relating to employment and driving will be explored. It will then look at how epilepsy can affect an individual’s life and wellbeing, and how this impact may be minimised. The session will also explore how the risk of epileptic seizures may be reduced and therefore the impact of epilepsy lessened.
Finally, the course will explore the process of epilepsy diagnosis and how it is made. Treatment options for will be outlined as well as further practical support available.
The course learning assessment will be carried out, and attendees must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.
On completion of the course you will earn 3 CPD points, this course will take around 3 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.

Units covered
- Unit 1 – Introduction to epilepsy – In this unit you will gain an understanding of what epilepsy is and how it can affect individuals personally. What can causes epilepsy and how they differ from each other. You will also learn what a seizure is and how it can present physically.
- Unit 2 – The different types of epileptic seizures – You will gain knowledge on seizures and how you can help if you witness a seizure. You will also learn how long seizures can last, what may trigger seizures and how epileptic seizures can impact the service user’s body.
- Unit 3 – The law relating to epilepsy – You will discuss laws relate to epilepsy, including ones that relate to the employment of those who have epilepsy and driving with epilepsy. You will also consider how those with epilepsy can minimise the risk of a seizure and lower the impact of epilepsy on their lives.
- Unit 4 – Diagnosis and treatment – You will look at the process of diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. You will explore the different type of epileptic medication and the potential impacts of treatment. You will finish the unit off by looking at what support an individual with epilepsy and those that may care for them can access.
