Suctioning awareness (level 3)

About this course

This level 3 suction training is aimed at anyone working in a care or nursing environment where suction is required. Overall, you will learn the theoretical and practical skills required to safely carry out oral suctioning on a service user.

  • The relevant anatomy and sites for suctioning.
  • Observing an individual during suction and an oral assessment.
  • Potential risks of suction.
  • The principles of safe handling of infected or soiled linen and clinical waste.
  • Consent.
  • The importance of having secure systems for recording, storing, and sharing information.
  • The correct positioning of the service user and preparation of equipment and environment.
  • Privacy and dignity – situations where an individual’s privacy and dignity could be compromised.
  • How to maintain privacy and dignity in the work setting.
  • The correct procedure for oral suction.
